FAQ's

1.       When does registration occur?

Barrie Minor Hockey registration begins early spring. Exact registration dates will be posted on the website. Registration is done online through the Hockey Canada. Registration is based on the players birth year and divisions are age specific.

2.       How can my player get a Permission to Skate form for AAA?

Permission to Skate forms are available from your home centre in early April

3.       If I am moving into Barrie, how can I register my player?

For all families moving into Barrie, you will be required to complete the OMHA or OHF transfer form which can be found on our website. If you have played in another OMHA centre then the OMHA transfer form would be required. If you have played in a centre outside of the OMHA then the OHF transfer form is required. Each form must be completed with appropriate documents attached and then Barrie Minor Hockey will submit this paperwork to the OMHA for approval.

4.       When are tryouts for the rep teams?

Rep tryouts cannot start until after the OHF Championship weekend in April. Tryouts for the AA, A, AE and Jr Colts will run after AAA tryouts. Midget tryouts for all levels of rep will not occur until the fall.   For players wishing to attend Barrie MHA tryouts, players must have paid a registration fee and have registered with Barrie before they can attend our tryouts. Exact dates and details about fees will be posted on our website.

5.       How do I get an official receipt for taxes?

Whenever you register your child for any BMHA program you are issued a receipt at the time of payment. This is your official tax receipt. If you require a replacement, requests must be made to the office. Receipts for Rep fees are by request only.

6.       If my son/daughter decides not to play, how to a get a refund ?

To receive a refund, a family must request this in writing to the office with a clearly stated reason for the refund. All requests are then forwarded to the appropriate BMHA Convenor and/or VP for the specific age group. Refunds are accepted until Dec 31st and all are subject to a $50.00 administration fee. The remainder of the refund will be pro-rated for the number of ice times the team has been on the ice and not the specific player. Game jersey and socks must be returned prior to the refund being processed.

7.       What qualifications are required to become involved on my son/daughter’s team?

Barrie Minor Hockey follows the OMHA qualifications for all rostered staff. Depending on the age level and type of hockey (rep or house league) different qualifications apply. For more specific qualifications, please visit the OMHA website or contact the office. Barrie Minor hockey requires all individuals involved with our teams to have a current police check on file.

8.       I would like to help out with my son/daughter’s team but not be a coach?

Parents can always help out their child’s team as an on-ice helper. For this position, each parent is required to have taken the PRS (or Speak Out)and, have a current police check on file with the office. For these individuals there is an insurance fee that must be paid to the office before they can step out on the ice. This fee is set by the OMHA and must be paid prior to Dec 10th of each year.

9.       What equipment do I need for my child to play?

In order for your child to play hockey at any level, they are required to wear “full equipment”. This protective equipment plays a crucial role in the prevention of injuries. As a parent you are responsible for ensuring that your son or daughter is properly protected. If you are starting hockey for the first time, please use the list as a general guide for what you will need and how hockey equipment should fit to ensure your child is properly equipped.

Important things to remember:

·         Kids cannot go on the ice without the neck guard and mouth guard

·         Make sure the equipment fits properly. If it doesn’t, it won’t protect and your child will struggle unnecessarily. Any sports store can help you with this, to ensure proper fitting for maximum protection.

·         A stick should come up to the child’s chin on skates. If you don’t know which way your child shoots, most stores offer straight sticks that will be sufficient until they decide for themselves.

·         Skates that are too small may result in sore and cold feet.

·         Blade Sharpening

a.       New skates do not come sharpened, so get them done before first ice.

b.      Frequency of sharpening depends on frequency of use. (~once per 4-6 ice times).

c.       If your child walks on concrete without guards, their skates will need to be sharpened immediately.

·         Make sure your child comes to practice or a game with a bottle of water.

10.   How do I become a Barrie Minor referee?

There is a link to the Barrie Hockey Referee Association on our website, please visit there for more information.

11.   How often are General Meetings held and why are they held?

General Meetings are held once during each season. Generally in January, at which the Audited Financial Report from the previous year is presented to the Members. This meeting is held to get feedback from Members on the programs to date. However, you do not have to wait for a meeting to address your concerns. This can be done at any time in writing by contacting the office or Director. The office will forward all information onto the appropriate BMHA individual.

12.   Who is considered a Member of the Association?

Members of the Association are all Officers and Directors; all Standing Committee Chairpersons, Convenors ; all past Presidents; any Team Official from each team – being the Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Trainer or Manager and one parent for each registered player. No members shall be entitled to more than one vote.

13.   When is the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held and who can attend and vote at this meeting?

The Annual General Meeting is held in April of each year. All of the above members are entitled to vote at the AGM. Proposed changes to the Constitution and By-Laws are presented to the members along with a slate of individuals running for office and are available at the office two weeks prior to the Annual General Meeting.

14.   Who do I send compliments or concerns to at Barrie Minor Hockey?

We really do appreciated hearing good things whether it’s about a particular experience with a volunteer, a Barrie MHA clinic or any positive feedback you have about our Association.   You can email your comments to one of the office staff who in turn will pass the information onto the appropriate Barrie MHA individual.

15.   I am unhappy about my child’s coach. What can I do?

If a parent is unhappy with their child’s coach we ask that you first wait 24 hours before approaching the team manager who would take the matter to the specific coach or coaching staff. Should the matter not be solved to your satisfaction, you may take it further by approaching your division convenor. Failing that you can file a complaint, in writing, directly to the Executive Committee.

16.   What is the difference between House League and Rep Hockey ?

For some, the difference is minimal, while others believe it to be substantial. Simply speaking the Rep league is a competitive league that a player must tryout and qualify for while players wishing to play house league are guaranteed a spot on a team no matter their skill. While both leagues enjoy the sport at its fullest, rep team players tend to be more skilled and tend to travel further distances for games. Rep team players also are required to pay an additional Rep fee over and above the base registration fee that house league team players pay.
